About Thunderbird American Indian Dancers
In Native American culture, music and dance are metaphors for the celebration of all aspects of life. They are, at the same time, indispensable fuels that have fed the flames of honor and tradition. Not only do they enable people to remember history in their minds, but to experience it with their bodies. Specializing in the songs and dances of the tribes of the Northwest Coast, Woodlands (Iroquois and Winnebago), Plains (Sioux) and the Southwest (Hopi and Santo Domingo), the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers repertoire includes the traditional “Fancy Dance” and “Hoop Dance”, as well as a variety of other distinct regional tribal dances. Wonderfully presented with descriptive narration, the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers’ programs are among the most compelling in North America.

About The Program
The Thunderbird American Indian Dancers will present two full days of programming featuring craft workshops, storytelling and authentic tribal dances. In the craft workshop participants will make a Winnebago “Life Cycle” necklace and learn about various tribal regalia. During the storytelling sessions, audiences will hear stories from the Iroquois and Great Plains people including “The Origin of Turtle Island,” “How The Old Grandfather Got His Crooked Face,” and “How The First Flute Came Into Being.” For the dance performances, Thunderbird Dancers will interpret the Grass Dance from the Sioux tribe which originated from when the people followed the buffalo herds and had to clear a space to put up their teepees. Thunderbird Dancers will also perform the Eagle Dance from the Hopi Tribe, a dance performed to honor the strength, power, and magnificence of the eagle, and the Robin Dance from the Iroquois tribe, that welcomes the spring season and imitates movements of the small bird. Last is a performance of the Contest Dance from the Winnebago tribe which is a challenge dance in which the dancer must pick up a feather off the ground with their mouth without putting their hands, knees or elbows on the ground. These Bronx Zoo programs are participatory and all ages are welcome.

Salsa Con Mambo Mondays @ Session 73

by admin on Aug.02, 2010, under DANCE NEWS, N.Y., PLACES TO GO-NY

Held in Session 73, a club/bar/restaurant featuring classic salsa and cha cha all evening long by resident DJ Babaloo who specializes in music for the mambo dancers including vintage mambo, charanga, 1970′s classic and new salsa from around the world.  There are 2 medium size dance rooms with wooden floors (which range from “medium speed” to a “bit slow” in sections) plus a separate room for the restaurant which serves a tapas menu of American, Asian and Latin food.  See Their Menu.  The bar and restaurant opens at 5:00 PM and there is an outdoor cafe as well when the weather is good.

There is a full bar and good sound system for dancing and the atmosphere is very nice for both partying and socializing.  The crowd is friendly, multi-cultural & educated with groups of all ages.  Coats, Jackets personal items can be safely guarded at the coat check in the rear for $1.00.  All items must  should be  checked as the staff at Sessions will nicely ask that items laying around on the couches or dance floor will be intrusive to lounge space.  Of course, tipping is encouraged.

Session 73 is located at 1359 First Avenue at the corner of East 73rd Street in the upper east side of Manhattan.  Phone – 212-517-4445, email  Session73@aol.com , web site www.Session73.com .  To see the exact location, Click Here For Map.  Public transportation:  #6 Lexington Avenue train to the 77th Street Station, then walk east to First Avenue and 73rd Street.  Or take the 1st or 2nd Avenue busses.
